Chapter 56

Maddy

Iknow somebody is repeatedly calling me, but I’m in the middle of giving one of my clients a hair trim. And wanting to be professional and respectful, I calmly have to stand there and continue cutting their hair like I’m not worried at all that something horrible has happened. Why else would my phone be vibrating so much?

“It looks like somebody would really like to get a hold of you,” the sweet older lady says to me as I work.

I wave it off with the hand my scissors are in. “I’m sure it’s nothing. I’ve been getting a lot of those spam calls lately,” I reassure her. But I am nervous.

And when the lady finally pays and leaves, I all but run back over to my station to pull my cell phone out of my purse.

Seven missed calls from Dean. Several texts, too. Most of them say something along the lines of, Madeline, call me now. It’s an emergency.

“I have to step outside for a moment,” I say to my coworkers. Then without waiting for them to tell me if it’s okay or not or if I have another client waiting to get their hair done with me, I dash out the glass door and make sure I’m far enough away from where anyone might be able to overhear me before I press the button to call Dean back.

“Geez, Maddy, there you are!” Dean says in a frantic voice that I don’t think I’ve ever heard before.

“Dean, what’s going on?” I ask. “Is Warner okay?”

He doesn’t have his phone. What if something happened to him, and he had no way of letting me know?

“He’s… I don’t know how he’s doing, in all honesty,” Dean tells me.

“What are you talking about?”

He takes a deep breath. “Maddy. I have no idea how. I swear to you. I said nothing. I told no one.”

Stones drop in my stomach. My hands grow clammy. I can hear the sound of my own heart beating.

“Dean. What. Happened.” My tone is very careful. Very direct.

“He… oh, Mads, he knows I’m his father.”

There it is. The words I never wanted to hear out of Dean’s mouth. Ever.

Am I that stupid not to think this was inevitable?

I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to do. I feel like I can’t breathe. I’m seeing dark spots in the corners of my vision. Great. A panic attack is about to start.

“Are you there?” he asks.

“I’m—yeah,” I say, sounding as if there’s a frog in my throat.

“I don’t know how this happened,” he assures me. “I swear to you. But not only does he know—now the entire school knows, too. He… he took it upon himself to announce it to everyone at the school assembly today.”

This makes my mouth drop open. I can picture it. An angry, fed-up Warner, just having learned the truth somehow, so blinded by his rage that he storms up to the microphone in that smelly old gym and tells everyone Dean’s and my dirty little secret.
